Prince Edward Island is grieving the loss of Mark McLane, MLA for Cornwall-Meadowbank and Minister of Finance, whose passing has left a deep impact on his family, colleagues, and the wider community.
First elected in a 2021 by-election and re-elected in 2023, McLane was known for his strong commitment to public service, as well as his compassion and dedication to the people of the province. During his time in office, he served not only as Minister of Finance but also as a member of the Standing Committee on Education and Economic Growth, where he was respected for his thoughtful input and collaborative approach.
McLane was widely admired for his calm and steady leadership style. He approached challenges with humility and optimism, always striving to bring people together and ensure that others felt heard and valued.
Before entering politics, he built a successful career in business and community leadership. He served as Executive Director of Golf PEI and was a former president of iWave Information Systems. Earlier, he founded PrinterWorks, earning the 1999 Business Development Bank of Canada Young Entrepreneur Award.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, McLane was deeply involved in his community. He served as chair of the Island Waste Management Corporation, was a board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of PEI, and supported the Stars for Life Foundation. He also contributed his time to coaching and managing youth sports such as ringette, field hockey, and soccer, leaving a lasting influence on many young people.
A devoted husband to Margie and a loving father to their three daughters, McLane balanced his professional life with a strong commitment to family. He was a graduate of the University of Prince Edward Island, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1993.
