Liscent Maxwell Obituary, Southern State Parkway Head-On Crash: Elderly Couple Killed By Alleged Drunk Driver

On a quiet Sunday night along the Southern State Parkway in Hempstead, New York, a devastating wrong-way crash claimed the lives of an elderly couple and left multiple others injured.

Authorities say the collision occurred just after 10:15 p.m. on March 15, when a westbound SUV driven by 36-year-old Diana Kutateladze struck another vehicle before crossing the median into oncoming traffic. The vehicle then collided with several cars, including a head-on crash with a Toyota Highlander carrying Donald Maxwell, 82, and his wife, Liscent, 88. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

In total, ten individuals across six vehicles were involved. Several victims were transported to area hospitals, including one person reported in critical condition overnight.

Investigators indicate that speed and possible impairment may have contributed to the crash. Kutateladze was hospitalized and later taken into custody, now facing multiple felony charges.

The eastbound lanes between Exits 15 and 17 were closed for nearly seven hours as crews investigated, reopening shortly after 5 a.m.

Family members describe the Maxwells as beloved and active in their community. The family is expected to release obituary, memorial, funeral, and visitation arrangements in the coming days. Until those details are confirmed, not all information may be complete or fully accurate. This report will be updated as new information becomes available.
