John Carter Martin, Death, Obituary Bogart GA, : Grandpa died while he stopped to help his grandson.
New details are emerging in a deadly crash in Oconee County, Georgia, that claimed the life of a man who had stopped to help his grandson.
The crash occurred Sunday night around 9:53 p.m. along Atlanta Highway near Whitehead Road. Authorities say a disabled Toyota Camry was stopped in the westbound lanes when a passing driver, identified as John Carter Martin of Monroe, pulled over to assist.
According to investigators, a Northeast Georgia Medical Center ambulance traveling westbound struck the rear of the disabled vehicle, forcing multiple vehicles off the roadway and pinning Martin and his grandson beneath them. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.
Family members say the grandson, 17-year-old Conner Lee Schoon, a student at Winder-Barrow High School, was critically injured. He was initially taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Arthur M. Blank Hospital.
According to his mother, Conner suffered multiple injuries, including lacerations, a broken clavicle, and internal bleeding caused by a lacerated spleen, requiring emergency surgery. He has since been moved out of intensive care and remains in stable condition.
The family shared that Conner has been coping with both physical and emotional trauma, including the moment he learned of his grandfather’s death after witnessing the crash.
The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team continues to investigate the incident. Authorities say charges are pending the outcome of that investigation.
The family is expected to release obituary, memorial, funeral, and visitation arrangements for Martin in the coming days. Pending those details, not all information may be fully confirmed, and this report may be updated as new information becomes available.
